Small electrical - like-for-like swaps only.

Like-for-like replacements: socket, switch, ceiling rose, light fitting, bathroom extractor fan. External socket swap after salt-corrosion. All within Building Regulations Part P for non-notifiable work. Anything that adds a new circuit, changes the consumer unit, or touches a bathroom zone-1 fitting is a Part-P registered electrician’s job.

The Dover angle

Dover-specific electrical issues are mostly the salt: external sockets on any seafront or cliff property corrode fast, particularly the ones the previous owner fitted with a ‘weatherproof’ IP44 fitting. IP44 isn’t enough here - the driving rain in an easterly gets past the flap. IP66 or better is the coastal spec, and worth switching to when the old one starts showing green corrosion around the contacts.

The other coastal-property issue worth checking is external metalwork earthing: satellite dishes, external light fittings, and metal downpipes on the older stock can lose their earth continuity as the fixings corrode. Not always a problem - but worth a five-minute inspection when we’re on the property anyway.

Where we stop - and who we hand you to

Firm Part-P boundary: any new circuit, any consumer unit (fusebox) change, any bathroom zone-1 or zone-2 fitting, any kitchen with a new hob or oven circuit - that’s Part-P notifiable work that a registered electrician has to certify. We tell you and step back. We can recommend two local Part-P electricians who’ve done fleet-quality work in the past.
