Sills, frames, fascias, soffits - the exposed timber elements that Dover’s weather takes apart on a five-to-eight-year cycle if they’re not maintained. Splice-in repairs, resin fill, sacrificial-piece replacement, and honest referral to a joiner when it’s beyond that.

Dover’s combination of chalk substrate and coastal easterlies drives a specific rot cycle. Chalk holds water at the wall base; salt-laden wind drives moisture into any exposed end-grain and softens the paint film. Once the film breaks, water gets under and the sill or fascia is on a five-year clock. On the cliff-top villages - St Margaret’s, Kingsdown - that cycle is closer to three years.
The right repair is species-appropriate splice-in (accoya for high exposure, oak for internal-facing), aggressive prep, and a salt-tolerant primer under the topcoat. Wrong: filling a rotten sill with polyester and hoping. That’s a two-year fix at best; we’ve had to redo other people’s.
If the rot has gone through the mortice-and-tenon on a window box-frame, or the sill has taken the frame down with it, that’s a heritage-joiner rebuild rather than a splice. We’ll tell you and step back - and we know two good ones on this coast worth passing the job to.
