Dover’s water supply is hard - classic North Kent chalk aquifer, 300+ mg/l calcium carbonate. Two consequences. First, tap heads scale up faster than they do in soft-water areas; a five-year-old kitchen tap here often needs the whole head replaced rather than the washer - the seat is pitted. Second, silicone seals on bath and shower edges degrade faster in salt-humid coastal air, particularly in bathrooms with poor extract. A three-yearly reseal cycle is realistic on cliff-facing bathrooms.
The other Dover-specific issue: older Victorian stopcocks in the terraces above Buckland seize open. If you’ve never turned yours in ten years, don’t discover it’s seized in an emergency. Install an isolation valve under the sink now and it’s a five-minute job under normal conditions.
Firm boundary: no gas work, no boiler repairs, no full bathroom rip-outs, no full central-heating diagnostics, no soil-stack modifications. That’s Gas Safe / plumber territory. We’ll do the surrounding non-gas work (tile a boiler recess, fit a splashback around a hob) but the gas itself we tell you and step back.
